NAIDOC Week 4 - 11 July

04-07-2010

NAIDOC stands for the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the 1920s which sought to increase awareness of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians within the Australian community.

NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia during July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Each year, a different city hosts the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball. This host city, National NAIDOC Poster Competition and the NAIDOC Awards winners are selected by the National NAIDOC Committee.

Last year Brisbane hosted the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony. The tickets for the event sold out in less than a week with more than 1300 guests were treated to a spectacular line up of Indigenous entertainment.

This year National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony is being held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 9 July. It promises to be an exciting event with tickets going on sale soon.
