I successfully reapplied for my job, but others were not so lucky.
On Valentines Day of that year the company “let go” 30 programmers and analysts. Many had worked there for 30+ years! There was no warning, they were all fired on the spot!
I saw adult men and women distraught and fearful that they would never work again given their age and lack of diverse experience. Their managers indifferent and uncaring - there was no counselling - just clean out your desk, you will be escorted from the building.
That day changed my life forever. I learned it was unwise to rely on anyone else for my income no matter how big the company or how good the job. I never wanted to be in that situation.
So at the age of 25 I started my first business, Precision Training and Consulting, an IT education company which taught business people all the tricks to using Microsoft Office.
After 8 years of teaching, I created another business, Seybienne, which developed automation solutions to help business people address productivity and efficiency issues in their business processes and information management.
However, after 2 years of consulting, I realised this was not scalable and I had really just created a job for myself. Yes, I had the freedom to choose who I worked for and who I worked with but if I didn’t work, I didn’t get paid.
I then started looking at selling information products as a way to scale and as a source of recurring revenue.
At the time, I was probably 5 years ahead of the technology to do what I wanted, but I persevered and learned many lessons along the way. Now I know what works and what doesn’t!
Now I show business people how to create their own information products and how to sell and deliver them online - in the fastest possible time!
