July can be a difficult month when you work in corporate or a professional service business.
This is often when promotions, salary reviews and pay rises are announced.
You may have spent the last 12 months working longer hours, solving difficult problems, meeting impossible deadlines and holding together work that should have been shared between several people.
Then the conversation finally arrives.
You are told there is no room in the budget for a meaningful pay rise.
The promotion has gone to someone else.
Perhaps you are thanked for your contribution, but nothing really changes.
You are expected to keep delivering at the same level, with the same workload and the same salary.
It is disappointing, but it can also be an important moment of clarity.
Your employer may never recognise the full value of your experience and expertise. That does not mean the value is not there.
It may simply mean you are relying on the wrong person to recognise it.
The knowledge you use every day to solve problems, improve systems, advise others, manage difficult situations and get work across the line could potentially be turned into a consulting service, mentoring offer, training program, digital product or other revenue stream.
You do not necessarily need to leave your job.
You do not need to have an entire business mapped out.
You simply need to understand what you know, who it could help and what they may be willing to pay for it.
The Expertise Monetisation Interview helps you identify your most valuable expertise, your strongest commercial opportunities and the offers you could realistically create.
The Starter Kit then helps you take the next steps without becoming overwhelmed.
Your employer’s pay review may be outside your control.
What you do with your expertise next is not.
