When people start thinking about creating a side hustle or a second income stream, one of the first things they often do is search for ideas.
They Google things like:
“What are the best side hustles?”
“What business can I start from home?”
“How can I make extra income?”
And within minutes they are looking at lists of things they have never done before.
Dropshipping. Affiliate marketing. Ecommerce. Content creation. Amazon stores. Digital products. Freelancing.
There is nothing necessarily wrong with any of them.
But if you have spent 10, 20 or 30 years building a career, I think there is a much better question to ask first:
What do I already know that someone else would pay me for?
Because your next side hustle may not require you to learn an entirely new skill.
It could already be hiding in your career experience.
The skills you take for granted may be valuable to someone else
One of the strange things about expertise is that the better we become at something, the more ordinary it can begin to feel.
You might look at a problem at work and immediately know what needs to happen.
You might know how to:
- organise a complicated project
- prepare a tender or proposal
- manage a difficult stakeholder
- improve a process
- implement software
- train a team
- navigate an industry requirement
- prepare reports
- manage compliance
- recruit people
- solve operational problems
- communicate complicated information simply
Because you have done these things for years, you may not regard them as particularly special.
Someone with less experience may see them very differently.
They may be willing to pay for the knowledge, templates, processes, guidance or judgement that would help them achieve the same result faster.
That is where expertise can begin to become an income-producing asset.
A side hustle or secondary income stream doesn’t have to mean starting from zero
The phrase “side hustle” can conjure up images of working late into the night trying to build a completely separate business.
But for an experienced professional, it can look very different.
It might be:
Consulting for a small number of clients.
A packaged advisory service.
Training or workshops.
Templates or resources.
A mentoring program.
A specialist audit or review.
An online program based on a process you already use.
A service designed around solving one particular problem exceptionally well.
You don’t necessarily need hundreds of customers.
You need to understand:
Who has a problem you know how to solve?
What outcome could you help them achieve?
How could that knowledge be packaged into something they can buy?
That is a very different starting point from trying to invent a business from scratch.
Your CV tells only part of the story
Your job titles don’t necessarily tell us what your expertise is worth.
“Operations Manager.”
“HR Business Partner.”
“Project Manager.”
“Marketing Manager.”
“Accountant.”
“Executive Assistant.”
“Lawyer.”
“IT Manager.”
Those labels tell us where you worked.
They don’t tell us about the problems you learned to solve along the way.
They don’t tell us what colleagues consistently ask you for help with.
They don’t show the shortcuts you have discovered, the mistakes you know how to avoid, the frameworks you use or the judgement you have developed.
That is the real intellectual property accumulated over a career.
And it may be far more commercially useful than you realise.
You don’t have to quit your job
Exploring a side hustle also doesn’t mean deciding tomorrow that you are going to resign.
For many people, that would be completely unrealistic and way too much pressure put upon yourself.
A side hustle can simply be a way to test what is possible.
Could somebody outside your employer pay for your expertise?
Is there a particular problem people need solved?
Could you develop an offer around it?
Could it eventually produce an additional income stream?
Perhaps it remains a small side business.
Perhaps it grows.
Perhaps it gives you choices you don’t currently have.
You don’t have to know the answer yet.
But I do think experienced professionals should know what options their expertise gives them.
Start with what you already have
Before you buy another course, learn another skill or spend six months searching for the perfect side-hustle idea, take an inventory of what you already know.
Your career may have given you something far more valuable than another business idea.
It may have given you the raw material for a business.
